Steamed Chana dal balls is one of the favorite Neivedyam recipes for Ganesha Chaturthi.
In Andhra we call them Karam aavari Kudumulu.
These Kudmulu can also be served for breakfast or snack with some coconut or ginger chutney.
The ingredient in these recipe are very similar to masala vada, but they are steamed.
You can also add onion, but I skipped it because I made it for Neivedyam.
Few Neivedyam recipes for Ganesha chaturthi / Vinayaka Chavithi –
Poopy seeds Halwa | Gasalu/ Gasa Gase Halwa
Coconut Jaggery balls | Kobbari bellam vundalu
- chana dal – 1 cup
- moong dal – ¼th cup
- small bell pepper ( any color is ok, I used red)- 1 chopped to small pieces
- small carrot grated (optional)
- green chilly – 3
- ginger -a tiny piece
- cumin seeds – ½ tsp
- few Coriander leaves
- salt to taste
Soak both the dals for 3 hrs. After 3 hours drain all the water from the dals. Take about 2 tsps of the soaked dal and keep aside. Now add the rest of the dal into the food processor.
Add the chopped bell pepper, carrot, green chilly, ginger, coriander leaves and cumin seeds, Pulse these ingredients. Don’t make a paste, grind the dal coarsely.
Take the mixture out and add the remaining dal and salt. Mix and taste the mixture and adjust the salt. Now make small balls of the chana dal mixture.
In a pressure cooker or a Idli steamer add some water in the bottom of the vessel. Let the water come to a boil. Place the balls in a greased plate and steam them in high heat for 15 minutes. Turn off the stove,
Wait till the steam goes down, remove and serve the karam kudumulu as Neivedyam For Bojja Ganapathi!
