Wishing everyone a very happy makara sankranti and pongal festival. Sankranti is a festival that signifies the beginning of the harvest season for the farmers of India.It is also called ‘Makara Sankranti’, it is celebrated primarily in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and few other states. In tamilnadu, the festival is called Pongal.
In Andhra pradesh & Telangana, we call it “pedda panduga” which means the big festival. It is generally a three day festival. Each day has its own significance.
• The first day being the bhogi panduga
• Second day Sankranti and
• The third day is Kanuma.
Family gatherings and delicious food are apart of the festival celebrations. Here i have compiled few recipes for the sankranthi or pongal festival.

- Sweet pongal recipe– traditional sweet pongal or sakkari pongal made during sankranthi festival. The sweet pongal is made with rice, moong dal, jaggery, ghee, cardamom and nuts.
- Poornam boorelu recipe– Boorelu is a traditional sweet from Andhra. Its a deep fried delicacy, often made during Sankranthi -the harvest festival of India.
- Oats sweet pongal recipe is a healthy take on the traditional sweet pongal recipe. It is made with oats, moong dal, jaggery, nuts, ghee and aromatic cardamom.
- PURAN POLI | BOBBATLU/BAKSHALU | OBBATU – Bobbatlu (Andhra), Obbatu (Karnataka) or Puran poli (Maharashtra) is a traditional Indian sweet flat bread made of toor dal or chana dal.
- Rava laddu with condensed milk recipe-Rava Laddu a popular and traditional Indian sweet made using Semolina, sugar, coconut, milk and cardamom.
- Chana dal and Rice Payasam– The cooked chana dal and rice are simmered in a jaggery, coconut- milk base and flavored with toasted nuts, ghee and cardamom.
- khas khas ka halwa recipe– is a healthy and nutritious dessert made with poppy seeds. Its a very traditional Indian sweet made during winter season. khas khas ka halwa is made by cooking the powdered poppy seeds with sugar and milk. And desi ghee is added for flavor and some chopped nuts are added for crunch.
- Green Mango Rice ( Mamidikaya Pulihora)– Green mango are seasoned with green chilly and a tempering and mixed with rice. A slight variation from the regular lemon rice.
- Chintapandu Pulihora (tamarind rice)-Tamarind rice (Chintapandu Pulihora) is a very special in Andhra Pradesh. ppoluar during festival as prasadam.
- Chana dal and Split Green moong dal– Deep fried crispy lentil fritters made with chana dal, split green gram dal and spices. A perfect snack. during festival season.
- Green Moong dal Vada- Green Moong dal is combined with green chilly, cumin, onion, coconut and coriander and deep fried to give you a perfect crisp savory fritter.
- Chickpeas Sundal -packed with protein, chickpeas sundal is a beautiful prasadm dish.
- SWEET CORN SUNDAL RECIPE – a slight variation from the traditional sundal recipe is the sweet corn sundal. a favorite among kids.
- MOONG DAL & CHANA DAL KOSAMBARI -Kosambari is a traditional salad from Karnataka. Its typically served as a part of the meal during festivals, weddings and gatherings. The soaked dals are combined with cucumber, carrot, coconut and tempered with mustard seeds, green chilly and asafetida. Its a healthy raw salad, loaded with protein.
