Sesame seeds are a good source of calcium, protein, minerals and antioxidants. They are crunchy and provide beautiful nutty flavor to the dishes.

In India, Sesame Ladoo is prepared in the winter months to keep the body warm and to give boost of energy. They are also made for Makara Sankranthi. While many use white sesame to make these ladoo, today I will be using black sesame seeds.

Black Sesame Seeds have slightly stronger taste than white sesame, but have many nutritional benefits.

Ingredients:

Black Sesame Seeds – I got them from Indian store, they can also be bought from amazon.

Coconut – desiccated unsweetened coconut

Jaggery Powder – available in Indian stores

How to make Black Sesame Seeds Ladoo-

1: Heat a pan in medium-low heat and add the black sesame seeds. Dry roast them mixing often for 5 minutes. Transfer them to a plate and let cool completely.

2-4: In the same pan roast almonds, cashew and coconut one at a time and remove.  Coconut turns brown in the matter of seconds, so keep an eye and roast only in low flame.

5: To a blender or a food processor add the cooled black sesame seeds and pulse it few times till sesame break down and becomes powder. Do not grind continuously, if not sesame will release too much oil. Remove and set a side.

6: Now add the pan fried cashew, almonds, coconut and cardamom and pulse it few times till it becomes powder. If you are left with few small pieces of nuts, thats fine.

7 & 8: Add the powdered jaggery to the nuts mixture and pulse again till everything is well combined.

9: Now add the ground black sesame powder back to the blender with the other ingredients and pulse few more times. Do not over grind.

10 & 11: Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and add the melted ghee. Mix it well by pressing the mixture, to release oil from black sesame.

12: Shape them into small rounds balls by pressing them between your palms. I got 13 small ladoo with these measurements.

Tips:

You can substitute black sesame with white sesame seeds

Dry roast the ingredients in low-medium flame to avoid burning.

Cool completely before grinding.

Almonds and cashew can be substituted with peanuts, or you can use just almonds or just cashew.

Use desiccated coconut not fresh coconut.

If you don’t want to use any ghee, pulse the mixture couple more times. The natural oils from sesame will help bind the ladoo.

  • ¼ cup cashew
  • ¼ cup desiccated coconut
  • 1 cup powdered jaggery
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 2 tablespoon ghee, melted

Instructions

  • Heat a pan in medium-low heat and add the black sesame seeds. Dry roast them mixing often for 5 minutes. Transfer them to a plate and let cool completely.
  • In the same pan roast almonds, cashew and coconut one at a time and remove.  Coconut turns brown in the matter of seconds, so keep an eye and roast only in low flame.

  • Now add the ground black sesame powder back to the blender with the other ingredients and pulse few more times. Do not over grind.
  • Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and add the melted ghee. Start with one tablespoon and add more if needed. Mix it well by pressing the mixture, to release oil from black sesame.
  • Shape them into small rounds balls by pressing them between your palms. I got 13 small ladoo with these measurements.

Notes

Its very important to pulse the ingredients to avoid releasing too much oil from sesame and nuts.
I used store bought powdered jaggery, but you can certainly use regular jaggery. Just grate ( or grind) it and use it.

You can use honey, add little at a time so it doesn’t become too sticky.
