This is the 3rd day of Navrati celebrations. I made lemon rice with dry green peas as neivedyam. A very popular neivedyam recipe which can be whipped up in literally five minutes, provided you have the cooked rice.
Dry green peas are packed with nutritional benefits. They have a good protein content, soluble fiber and no fat just to name few. When you add dry legumes to our rice dishes, it gives a fine balance of protein and carbs. To one cup of rice i use 1/2 cup of dry green peas. This proportion works just fine.
Just to let you know my Picasa is not working for some reason, that’s why you don’t see the name tags on the pictures. Got to fix it.
Rice – 1 cup ( cook the rice with 2 cup of water)
Dry green peas – 1/2 cup ( Soak the peas overnight in some water, in the morning add 1/2 tsp of salt and cook in the pressure cooker till soft, but still holding its shape. Drain the peas)
Green chilly – 5 chopped fine
Few curry leaves
Lots of Lemon juice ( yes, dry peas soak up quite a bit of lemon juice)
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves for garnish and
the tempering ingredients.
In a pan, add 2 tbsps of oil, when it gets hot add 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds. When they start poping add 1/2 tsp each of chana dal and urad dal, chopped green chilly and the curry leaves. Fry for few seconds. Then add generous pinch of hing, followed by cooked peas, 1/4th tsp of turmeric powder and some lemon juice. Close the lid and cook for three minutes. Then turn off the heat.
Now add the cooked rice, salt, lemon juice and coriander leaves. Mix.
Serve as neivedyam and enjoy with your family!
