South Indian style coconut rice recipe made with fresh coconut and chana dal. It’s a mildly spiced rice recipe, which can be served as is or with a simple curry. Coconut rice is also called thengai sadam in tamil, kobbari annam in telugu or nariyal chawal in hindi.
Coconut rice is a mildly spiced rice recipe, which can be easily made. In this method of coconut rice, the rice is cooked separately and mixed with the tempering of spices and coconut. Serve the coconut rice as is or with a plain curry like aloo kurma.
Coconut rice is made as neivedyam, for festivals and celebrations. It can also be made breakfast, lunch box or for travel. It’s a mess free recipe, which makes it easy to carry.
Another popular way of making coconut rice is by using coconut milk. It is similar to pulao with all the aromatic Indian spices.
Coconut rice is mostly made with white rice like basmati rice or sona masoori rice, but today I will using brown rice.
I have also added cooked chana dal, which gives crunch and bite to the recipe. Cook the chana dal in water or pressure cooker with some salt. cook until just done. Make sure its not mushy, it should be soft but not mushy.

How to Cook Brown Rice?
Wash 1 cup of brown rice in water and soak it for 15 minutes.
cooking brown rice in the rice cooker– add the soaked rice with 2 ¼ cup water. Turn on the cooker and cook until done. Rest the rice for atleast 10 minutes with the lid on before serving.
cooking brown rice in a pan – add 2.5 cups of water and the soaked brown rice in a pan. Add a pinch of salt and mix well. Bring it to a boil and reduce the heat. Cook the brown rice in low flame for 30 minutes. Turn off the heat. Let rest atleast 15 minutes before serving. Fluff up the rice before serving.
cooking brown rice in pressure cooker– add the soaked brown rice and 2 ¼ cups of water in pressure cooker. Mix well. reduce the heat to medium and cook for two whistles. Turn off the heat. Let stand at least 15 minutes before releasing the pressure.

How to make coconut rice recipe with step by step pictures-
In a pan add the oil. When the oil gets hot add the mustard seeds and let the mustard pop.
Once the mustard pops, add the chana dal, cashew and cumin seeds. Saute till light brown.
Add the green chili, chopped ginger and curry leaves. Saute for 30 seconds.
Then add the freshly grated coconut and saute for two minutes.
Add the coriander leaves and saute for a minute.
Finally add the cooked rice, cooked chana dal. lemon juice, salt and freshly chopped coriander leaves.
Mix well and check for seasoning.
Serve as is or as a part of the meal.

Coconut Rice ( South Indian Style)
Ingredients
- Cooked rice – 2 cups
- oil – 3 tsp
- mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- chana dal – ½ tsp
- cumin – ½ tsp
- cashew – 2 tsps
- green chili- 2, slit
- ginger pieces – ½ tsp
- coriander powder ½ tsp
- few curry leaves
- fresh grated coconut – 1 cup
- cooked chana dal-⅓ cup
- asafatedia- a pinch
- coriander leaves for garnish
- lemon Juice – 1 tsp or to taste
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- In a pan add the oil. When the oil gets hot add the mustard seeds.
- When the mustard pops, add the chana dal, cashew and cumin seeds. Saute till light brown.
- Add the green chili, chopped ginger and curry leaves. Saute for 30 seconds.
- Then add the freshly grated coconut and saute for two minutes.
- Add the coriander sand saute for a minute.
- Finally add the cooked rice, cooked chana dal. lemon juice, salt and freshly chopped coriander leaves.
- Mix well and check for seasoning.
- Serve as is or as a part of the meal.
