Ingredients

  • 2 ½ lb jackfruit pic above for reference
  • 3 cloves garlic, sliced
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 ½ teaspoon urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 red chili, broken
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • little jaggery (if needed)
  • salt to taste

To grind -

  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 3 - 4 dry red chili
  • 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1 big handful of fresh coriander leaves

Instructions

Cutting the Jackfruit -

  • Cut the jackfruit into long strips. I just used the fruit, not the flesh. The ones we get in Indian stores are sold by pieces like shown in the picture. If the fruit is sticky, rub some oil in to your palms before cutting. Do not discard the seeds. They can be boiled with salt and enjoyed as a snack.

To Grind -

  • To a blender add the mustard seeds, red chili, fresh coconut and coriander leaves. Blend until powdered. do not add any water. Set a side.

Making the Fry-

  • To a skillet add oil and once the oil gets hot, add mustard seeds and let them pop. Now add urad dal, cumin seeds, dry red chili and fry until the dal gets light brown. Add garlic and saute for 30 – 45 seconds.
  • Add jackfruit and turmeric to the tempered ingredients. Cook the jackfruit till soft, stirring often. It takes about 15 minutes depending on how ripe it is.
  • Add the ground spice mixture, coriander powder, jaggery and salt. Mix it and cook for 5-7 minutes, uncovered. You can add some lemon juice. Taste and adjust the salt.

Notes

Pick the jackfruit which is not ripe, if not the palya will be too sweet.
If the jackfruit is little sweet do not add jaggery.
