Recently I shared 6 different Avocado Toast recipes, for which I received so many great reviews from many readers in the social media.
That motivated me to try few other flavors. Today I am excited to share these savory toasts from 4 different cuisines. Each of these recipes are so unique and truly represent the flavors used in that region.
Growing up in India, we mostly ate savory things for breakfast. If you are like me who loves savory dishes for breakfast or looking for a change from the sweet recipes, these savory toast ideas will surely please you.
These recipes take a bit more time than your typical PB & J, but it’s so worth it.

Tomato Chutney Toast –
This Tomato Chutney made with Indian flavors is sweet, spicy and tangy. This chutney is so versatile and can be used in toast, sandwiches, or enjoy with roti (flat bread).
To make the tomato chutney- we sauté onion, ginger, garlic and chili until softened. Add tomato and cook for a few minutes till it softens. Then we add the chili powder, coriander and cumin powder, sugar, salt and lemon juice (just little). Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally till chutney thickens and has jam consistency. Taste and adjust the salt and sugar.
Toast a crusty bread (like sourdough) and top it with this chutney and enjoy! This chutney stays fresh for up to ten days in the refrigerator.
Avocado Toast with Pico De Gallo-
Avocado Toast is one of our favorite breakfast recipes. A perfect ripe avocado paired with crispy bread and topped with pico de gallo. Quick and easy and can be easily customized to your liking.
To make the pico de gallo – in a bowl add red onion, tomato, jalapeno, coriander leaves, salt and lime juice and toss it well.
Pico de Gallo can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. If making ahead, add the salt right before serving.
Mushroom Toast with Balsamic Vinegar
This mushroom toast feels so gourmet but is so easy to put together. Enjoy it for breakfast or serve as an appetizer on a crostini.
Onions and mushrooms are cooked with garlic, balsamic vinegar, sugar and a dash of hot sauce until all the moisture is absorbed and mushrooms are golden brown.
Serve this sauteed mushroom on a toasted crusty bread!
Mediterranean Hummus Toast with Vegetables –
This Mediterranean Hummus Toast – toasted bread is smothered with hummus and topped with fresh vegetables like cucumber, cherry tomato, cilantro, zaatar spice and vegan feta cheese.
Healthy, no cook meal which can be enjoyed any time of the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sour dough, French or Italian bread works best.
Stays fresh for up to 10 days in the refrigerator.
Any kind of store bought or homemade hummus can be used.

Savory Toast Recipes (Vegan)
Ingredients
Tomato Chutney Toast-
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 large ripe tomato, diced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2 teaspoon garlic, finely chopped
- 2 green chili, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chili powder (mild)
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- ½ teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil
- ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
- ¼ teaspoon hing (asafoetida) optional
Avocado Toast with Pico de Gallo-
- 2 slices toasted bread ( like sour dough)
- 1 ripe avocado
- 1 roma tomato
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander leaves
- 2 teaspoon jalapeno or green chili or pickled jalapeno, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- salt to taste
Mushroom Toast –
- 8 oz mushrooms ( I used button mushrooms, but you can use any kind)
- 1 table spoon balsamic vinegar
- ¼ cup diced onion
- 1 small garlic clove, finely chopped ( or use ½ garlic powder)
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- ¼ teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 2 -3 slices of bread
Mediterranean Hummus Toast –
- 2 slices of bread ( like sour dough)
- 4 tablespoon hummus ( any flavor of your choice)
- ½ cup cherry tomato, diced
- ½ cup english cucumber, diced
- 1 tablespoon parsley or coriander leaves, chopped
- 1 – 2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1- 2 teaspoon zaatar
- 2 tablespoon vegan feta cheese, crumbled (If not vegan , use regular feta)
- salt to taste
Instructions
Tomato chutney Toast –
- Heat oil in a sauce pan and add the mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds pop, add the asafoetida, onion, green chili, ginger and garlic. Saute till onion turn soft.
- Now add the tomato, red chili powder, coriander and cumin powder, sugar and salt to taste. Mix it well and cook uncovered till tomato thickens and has jam consistency, about 20 minutes. Mix it occasionally to avoid burning.
- Taste the chutney, add lemon juice to your liking. If needed adjust the salt. . Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Toast a crusty bread like sour dough, spread the tomato chutney and enjoy!
Avocado Toast with Pico de Gallo-
- To make the pico de gallo – combine tomato, onion, coriander leaves, jalapeno, salt and lemon juice. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Toast the bread and add half of the smashed avocado and top it with fresh Mexican pico de galo.
Balsamic Mushroom Toast –
- Heat oil in large skillet. Add onion and cook for 2 minutes. Add the garlic and sliced mushroom and cook for 3-4 minutes.
- Add the balsamic vinegar and sugar and cook till vinegar is absorbed by the mushroom and the sugar caramelizes.
- Add the hot sauce, salt and pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
- Toast the bread and top it with mushrooms and serve immediately.
Mediterranean Hummus Toast –
- In a bowl combine, cherry tomato, cucumber, salt, lemon juice and parsley.
- Toast the bread and spread a layer of hummus.
- Top the toast with tomato cucumber mixture, sprinkle some zaatar and feta cheese. Enjoy immediately!
