Bengaluru Sandwich ( also called as Bun Nippat Masala) is a street style snack found in many places in Bengaluru. Refreshing salad, sweet pineapple, crunchy nippatu and masala peanuts combined with sweet and spicy chutneys make this sandwich lip smacking good.

Love South Indian snacks? Here are few more – Punugulu, Masala Vada, Maddur Vada, and Murmura.

Why is it called Bengaluru Sandwich?

Sandwich layered with onion, tomato, cucumber and chutneys is a very common street snack in India. What makes this Benagluru special is the use of Nippatu (rice crackers) and Congress Kadlekayi (masala peanuts).

Nippatu is a deep fried spicy rice cracker and Congress Kadlekayi is made with roasted peanuts and masala powders. These two snacks are quite famous and are widely consumed in Bangalore and all over Karnataka. The combination of these crunchy savory snacks combined with pineapple and other sandwich ingredients make this dish interesting and very tasty.

If in Bangalore I would highly recommend buying these snacks from local stores, they are the best. But if you are planning to make these at home, here are the recipes – Congress Kadlekayi and Nippatu.

Ingredients:

Bun – I used regular burger buns, you can also use masala buns or any of your favorite buns.

Pineapple – thinly sliced fresh pineapple

Nippatu – used store bought

Masala Peanuts – can be easily made at home ( recipe link included)

Step by Step Method

1 Finely chop the onion and soak it in water for 10 minutes to remove the strong raw flavor. Drain and set a side.

2- Add the onion, coriander leaves and grated carrot to a bowl and mix it well.

3- Slice the bun, apply butter/oil and roast in the tawa or a toaster till light brown.

4- Apply green chutney and tamarind chutney on both bun slices. Now crush a nippatu and place it on one of bun slice.

5- Now add congress kaldlekayi (masala peanuts) and onion carrot and coriander mixture. Sprinkle some salt and chaat masala.

8 – Serve immediately.

Tips –

Use fresh and tasty nippatu and masala peanuts in the recipe.

Toast the bun if not the sandwich will be soft and will become soggy.

When it comes measurements, there are no hard rules. You can add ingredients according to your taste.

Do not skip the pineapple, goes really well with the other flavors.

Soaking the onion in water is optional. I prefer doing it as we do not like the raw flavor of onion.
