Pakora Waffles – Onion pakora made in waffle form. Enjoy this non fried version of the famous Indian street food for breakfast or snack. Vegan and Gluten free too!

What is Onion Pakoda?

Onion Pakoda is a famous deep fried snack made with besan, lots of thinly sliced onion, and spices. Crispy on the outside with a soft onion inside these pakora are one of the most loved snacks from Indian sub continent.

Usually served for partys, weddings or as an evening snack with chai and chutneys.

Now you can enjoy these pakora’s anytime of the time as they are served in waffle form.

Ingredients needed to make Onion Pakoda Waffles

How to make Pakora Waffles-

1 & 2 – Thinly slice two medium onion and add it a large bowl. Add one tablespoon finely chopped ginger, 2 chopped green chili, 1 spring curry leaves, handful of coriander leaves and one teaspoon salt. Mix it and let the mixture rest for 10 minutes.

3- After 10 minutes mix the onion mixture and add 1 cup besan, ¼ cuprice flour, ½- to 1 teaspoon red chili powder, ½ teaspoon ajwain, 1 tablespoon hot oil and ⅓ teaspoon salt.

4- Squeeze and mix all the ingredients well. Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes. Do not add any water at this point. If you feel there is lot more onion than besan in mixture, that’s prefect, because that’s what we are looking for.

5 – After 10 minutes mix it again. The moisture from the onion will be enough to bind the mixture together. If it is too dry add 1-2 tablespoon of water and mix it again. Do not add too much water, the dough should be thick but moist. Divide the mixture to 4 equal parts.

5- Heat a waffle maker, drizzle some oil and place one of the mixture in the middle. Apply some oil on your hands and gently flatten the dough. Spread it thinly. Sprinkle some oil and cook the waffle till crispy and golden.

Repeat with the rest of the dough. Serve the waffle immediately. Sprinkle some chaat masala and fresh coriander leaves.

Serving Suggestions:

Enjoy the pakora waffles with green chutney and date chutney or Maggi sweet and spicy tomato sauce and a cup of hot chai.

Tips & Notes:

The key to making good onion Pakora waffle is making sure we add lots of thinly sliced onions.

For best taste and texture serve immediately after they are made.

To prep in advance – add all the ingredients except salt and mix it. Add salt just few minutes before you are ready to make the waffles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is besan same as chickpea flour?

No. Besan is made with bengal gram (black chana), where as Chickpea flour is made with Garbanzo beans (kabuli chana).

Where can I buy besan and rice flour?

You can easily find them in Indian stores or buy them online.
