Pomegranate is a round reddish fruit with a smooth exterior. Inside of the pomegranate is full of seeds called arils. They are juicy, sweet and slightly tart in taste.

It is native of Iran and have been widely cultivated through out the Middle East, Africa, Europe and many Asian countries.

While I prefer eating the Pomegranate as a fruit, but when in season and I get them in bulk from Costco and use few of the fruits to make Pomegranate Juice.

Health Benefits of Pomegranate

  • packed with vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin E, folate and potassium
  • has high level of antioxidants which help to reduce chronic inflammation in the body
  • good for skin

When are Pomegranate available?

According to Wikipedia, In the Norther Hemisphere they are in season from October to February. In southern Hemisphere they are available from March to May.

When are Pomegranate available in US?

In US pomegranate is available from September to late December.

Cutting the Pomegranate

1- Wash the pomegranate and make an incision in the top part of the pomegranate and cut all the way creating a circle.

2 – Pull it off and you can see some of the seeds.

3 & 4 – Make 4 to 5 slits as shown in picture 3 and pull apart each section.

5 & 6 – Take each section and gently pull apart the seeds in to a plate. Discard the yellow membrane.

7 & 8 – Repeat with the rest of the fruit. If you find any yellow bits, just remove them.

I generally don’t wash the pomegranate, but if you prefer washing them, do it just for the amount you are going to eat or juice ( because the extra moisture from water will make the pomegranate soggy)

How to make homemade Pomegranate Juice

9 & 10 – Add 3 cups of pomegranate ( about 2 large pomegranates) to a blender. Pulse it few times to break them apart and release the juice. Do not make puree, we just need to pulse until the outer layer of the seeds are broken.

11 & 12 – Use a metal strainer to strain the seeds out. You can also use a muslin cloth to strain the juice.

Serving Suggestions

While you can enjoy the pomegranate juice as is, I feel it is slightly thick to my liking. So we add a cup of water and a pinch of black salt (kala namak) and enjoy this refreshing sweet and tart juice. You can also use seltzer water.
